The Oily Skin Guide

Skincare for oily skin

Shine is not a flaw to be scrubbed away. It is a signal, and it responds best to a calm, consistent skincare ritual.

Why skin becomes oily

Oil, or sebum, is made by glands in the skin to keep it supple and protected. Oily skin simply makes more of it. How much is largely inherited, and male hormones raise sebum production, which is why many men notice shine through the forehead, nose and chin.

Other factors may play a part for a time: heat and humidity, the warmer months, stress and broken sleep. Over-cleansing can leave skin feeling tight while doing little for shine, so steady, gentle care tends to serve better than frequent, aggressive washing.

01

Cleanse

Morning and evening, with lukewarm water.

Choose a cleanser that lifts oil without leaving the skin tight.

The ritual

Massage for thirty seconds, rinse and pat dry. Twice a day is enough; more often can unsettle the skin.
