The Beard Guide

The beard for your face

Density is largely inherited. Shape is a choice. Both reward patience and good care.

Understanding beard density

How fully a beard grows is decided mostly by genetics and by how sensitive the hair follicles are to testosterone. Age plays a part too: many men find their beard keeps filling in through their twenties and beyond.

Sleep, stress and general health may also influence growth, though the effect varies from man to man. No product can change what is inherited. Good care keeps the hair and the skin beneath it in fine condition, so the beard you have looks its fullest.

When choosing a shape, the aim is balance: add length where the face is short, and width where it is narrow.

01

Patchy beard

Gaps along the cheeks or under the jaw are common, and often fill in with time.

Patience matters more than any product.

The ritual

Let it grow for eight to twelve weeks before judging it. Keep the edges tidy so the gaps look intentional, and use a few drops of oil daily to keep the hair soft and the skin beneath comfortable. If hair loss appears suddenly, see a doctor.

02

Round face

Keep the cheeks shorter and let length build at the chin.

The added length draws the face longer.

The ritual

Ask for a squared or slightly pointed line at the chin, and keep the sideburns close.

03

Square face

Soften a strong jaw with rounded edges and a little fullness at the chin.

Keep the cheek line clean and natural.

The ritual

Avoid sharp, boxy corners at the jaw. A rounded beard of medium length suits most square faces.

04

Long face

Keep the chin short and let the sides grow fuller.

Width at the cheeks balances the length.

The ritual

Avoid a long, pointed beard. Fuller sides and a moustache help shorten the line of the face.
